Full & partial refurbishments

Back to brick, then forwards.

Whole house projects taken back to the structure and rebuilt, from damp and insulation through to the final coat.

Overview

Old houses do not need to be cold or damp.

A lot of the housing stock around Worthing, Hove and Brighton is solid wall, built long before anybody thought about insulation or condensation. Left alone it is cold, expensive to heat and prone to mildew in the corners of north facing rooms.

Treated properly it is better than almost anything built since. Solid walls, generous ceiling heights, real joinery and floors worth restoring.

A full refurbishment is our favourite kind of job because everything is on the table at once. You can fix the damp, the insulation, the layout, the services and the finishes in one go, in the right order, instead of paying three times over the next decade.

What it involves

The unglamorous half of the job.

Levels, damp proofing, insulation, plasterboard and plaster. Nobody takes a photo of it and nobody talks about it, and it decides how the entire house feels for the next twenty years.

Walls set out to a laser, floors levelled, and plaster flat enough that the light coming through a window does not show up every trowel mark.

  • Full strip out and structural repairs
  • Damp diagnosis and breathable insulation systems
  • Rewire, replumb and heating replacement
  • Kitchen, bathrooms and joinery

How we approach it

The parts that decide whether it lasts.

01

Diagnose first

Damp is a symptom. We find out whether it is penetrating, rising or condensation before anybody buys a product.

02

Breathable build ups

Isotherm and breathable systems on solid walls, so the wall can still dry and the mildew does not come back.

03

Services planned once

Rewire, replumb and heating all set out together before plastering, not chased in afterwards.

04

Finished, not handed over

Floors, joinery, tiling and decoration included, so you move back into a finished house.

Detail

Original floors are worth saving.

Parquet, pine boards and tiled hallways are usually still under whatever was laid on top of them in the 1980s, and they are almost always worth bringing back.

It costs less than a good engineered floor and there is nothing you can buy that looks like it.

  • Lifted, cleaned and relaid where blocks are missing
  • Sanded and finished on site
  • New sections matched to the original pattern
  • Sealed to take real family traffic
