About

Wayne Harman, and a board on the front of your house.

A Worthing building and carpentry company that has been working on West Sussex and Brighton homes since 2013.

Our story

Started with carpentry. Ended up running the whole build.

Harman Building and Carpentry Ltd was set up in March 2013 by Wayne Harman, a City and Guilds qualified carpenter, and it has been working continuously on Worthing, Hove and Brighton properties ever since.

It began as carpentry. Kitchens, doors, staircases, fitted work, first and second fix on other people’s sites. What kept happening was that clients would ask who was going to sort the wall, the steel, the plastering, the electrics. Eventually the answer became: we will.

Today the company takes on full refurbishments, extensions, structural alterations, knock throughs, loft and garage conversions, kitchens, bathrooms, maintenance and bespoke joinery. The one thing that has not changed is who is standing on the site.

We are based at 46 Victoria Road in Worthing and work across West Sussex and Brighton and Hove. If our board is on the front of a house near you, knock on the door and ask them what we were like. We would rather you did that than read a paragraph about how much we care.

A property under full scaffold
What we take on

Big enough for a seafront villa. Small enough to answer the phone.

The work ranges from a single structural opening in a terrace to a five storey seafront property under full scaffold. What decides whether we take a job on is not the size of it, it is whether we can run it properly alongside what we already have on.

That is why we will sometimes tell you we cannot start until a certain month, rather than starting and then disappearing. A start date that gets kept is worth more than an early one that does not.

How we work

Four things we will not compromise on.

01

You get the same person throughout

The person who visits, the person who prices and the person on site are the same person. There is no account manager and no handover.

02

Nothing gets covered up

If something is uncovered behind the plaster you hear about it the same day, with what it means for the price and the programme.

03

Structural work is engineered

Anything load bearing is designed by a structural engineer and signed off by building control. There is no other acceptable way to do it.

04

The finish is a carpenter’s finish

Every job ends in second fix joinery, which means it ends with the trade this business was built on.

Our promise
“You will get the person who priced the job on the site doing the job. If something is uncovered we will tell you the day we find it, not the week we invoice for it. And the price you sign is the price you pay unless you change your mind about something.”
Harman Building & Carpentry · Worthing, established 2013
Why it matters who you pick

Most of what goes wrong on a build has nothing to do with bricks.

It is communication, sequencing and who is accountable when something is uncovered. Here is the honest difference.

The usual builder
Harman
Who actually turns up
A different crew each week, and a manager you never meet
Wayne on site, running the job he priced
The quote
A number on the back of a page with no breakdown
An itemised written price, with the unknowns named upfront
Structural work
Steel sized by eye and hoped for
Engineer’s calculations and building control sign off, every time
The finish
Trades who each blame the last one
One carpenter’s eye across the whole job, first fix to final coat
Period properties
Solid walls treated like cavity walls, damp back within a year
Isotherm, breathable build ups and lath and plaster done properly
When it goes quiet
Weeks with nobody on site and no explanation
A start date we keep to, and a phone that gets answered
After you have paid
Good luck getting a call back
Still the same number, still the same person

Whether it is a wall coming down or a whole house coming back to life, the first step is the same. A conversation, then a visit, then a written price you can actually rely on.
